BJP Says Modi’s 12 G20 Summits Showcase Strong Leadership
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now participated in 12 G20 summits since taking office in 2014 — a milestone the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) described on Saturday as proof of his consistent leadership and India’s expanding role in shaping the global agenda.
According to the party, Modi’s sustained presence at every summit reflects India’s rising diplomatic influence, especially in areas like global finance, security, sustainability, and emerging technologies.
2014–2015: India Pushes Financial Transparency and Anti-Terror Measures
Modi made his G20 debut at the 2014 Brisbane summit in Australia, where discussions focused on financial transparency. He urged world leaders to act jointly against black money and strengthen global financial accountability.
At the 2015 Antalya summit in Turkey, Modi called for a coordinated crackdown on terror financing, aligning India’s long-standing concerns with global security priorities.
2016–2017: Economic Reforms, Innovation, and Health Cooperation
At the 2016 Hangzhou summit in China, the Prime Minister stressed structured economic reforms, innovation-driven growth, and unified action against terrorism. He also highlighted sustainable lifestyles and equal opportunities as essential pillars of global development.
The 2017 Hamburg summit in Germany saw Modi push for deeper international cooperation in technology, health security, and development initiatives.
2018–2019: Focus on Economic Offenders and Digital Governance
In 2018 Buenos Aires, Argentina, Modi presented a nine-point agenda to curb fugitive economic offenders and urged support for infrastructure growth through tools like the Global Infrastructure Hub.
During the 2019 Osaka summit in Japan, which centred on digitisation, Modi advocated for a global framework on digital governance and secure data flows, emphasising India’s rapid digital revolution and success in expanding digital payments.
2020–2021: Ease of Living, Green Energy, and Global Health
At the 2020 G20 hosted by Saudi Arabia, Modi promoted Ease of Living as a universal development guiding principle focused on human-centric growth.
In 2021 Rome, Italy, he advanced the ‘One Earth, One Health’ vision, pledged to make Indian Railways carbon neutral by 2030, proposed a Clean Energy Projects Fund, and pushed for global standards for green hydrogen — ideas that received broad support.
2022–2023: Climate Action and Landmark Decisions Under India’s Presidency
Modi’s 2022 Bali participation spotlighted sustainability and climate action. He launched Mission LiFE globally and introduced the Arogya Maitri Project.
At the 2023 G20 in New Delhi, India achieved major diplomatic breakthroughs, including securing permanent African Union membership, advancing digital public infrastructure, and launching the Global Biofuels Alliance. Modi also proposed a G20 talent visa and a satellite mission for environmental monitoring.
2024–2025: Global South, AI Governance, and Debt Relief
During the 2024 Brazil summit, the Prime Minister stressed the need to fully implement the New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration and improve the representation of the Global South in global decision-making.
In 2025, at the ongoing G20 summit in South Africa, Modi’s focus has been on technology, inclusive AI governance, and debt relief mechanisms for vulnerable nations, reflecting India’s long-term vision for fair and inclusive global development.
